What are GLP-1 medications?
GLP-1 medications are prescription drugs that act like the glucagon-like peptide-1 hormone. They can improve blood sugar control and may help with weight loss; results vary by medication and dose. Common side effects include nausea, vomiting, and diarrhea, which are often reduced by increasing the dose gradually, exactly as prescribed. The risk of low blood sugar is higher when a GLP-1 medication is combined with other drugs that lower blood sugar, such as insulin or sulfonylureas. Some GLP-1 medications caused thyroid C-cell tumors in animal studies, and it is not known whether they cause them in people, so they are not recommended for anyone with a personal or family history of medullary thyroid carcinoma or Multiple Endocrine Neoplasia syndrome type 2. They may also not be appropriate if you have had pancreatitis. Your clinician reviews these risks before prescribing.
How should I take my GLP-1 medication?
Take it exactly as your provider prescribed and follow the directions on your pharmacy label. Taking a different dose than prescribed can cause side effects that may be serious. If you have questions after your medication arrives, contact your care team before your first dose.
What should I do if I miss a dose?
Contact your care team before taking your next dose. Depending on the medication and how much time has passed, your clinician may adjust your next dose to lower the risk of side effects.
How should I store GLP-1 medication?
Follow the storage instructions on your pharmacy label. Injectable GLP-1 medications are usually kept in the refrigerator between doses and can lose effectiveness if they get too warm. Tablets are usually stored at room temperature.
When should I take my dose?
Follow your prescription. A weekly injection is taken on the same day each week and can be taken at any time of day, with or without meals. Daily tablets have their own instructions, and some must be taken on an empty stomach, so check your pharmacy label.
Can I continue a dose I was already taking with another doctor?
Tell your provider about your previous prescription and dose during your intake. If it is medically appropriate, your provider will set your dose accordingly.
